Dose of Prose

No, this post is not about washing your hair with food. If you were looking to read about that kind of bread, I’m afraid I have some unfortunate news. However, if you have any interest in haircare, keep on reading. Today’s post is a product review of the brand Bread Beauty Supply™. I’ve had my eye on Bread for a while, and I’m glad I finally decided to try their products. In this post, I’ll give an unfiltered and honest review of Bread.

If you’re new to my blog, I’m sure you’re probably wondering, why would I trust a stranger’s opinion on the internet? Well, not to toot my own horn, but… *toot toot* ! My claim to fame, if you will, is doing product reviews, specifically hair product reviews. Some of my most popular reviews on my blog are my reviews of rideshare company Alto and Jimmy Butler’s coffee brand, Big Face.

I’ve also been a product tester for a few well-known haircare companies, where I helped them develop their curly hair product lines. Flawless by Gabrielle Union is one example, if you want to take a look at that review as well. So, it’s safe to say I know a thing or two about product reviews. But if you still don’t trust my opinion (or don’t agree with it), no worries! I always encourage doing your own research and doing what’s right for you. Either way, I hope that this post of my personal experience is informative and helpful in some way, shape or form.

For those who are visual learners or have short attention spans, I made a Youtube video that details everything I talk about in this blog post, but in video form. Check it out below:

About Bread

Here’s a short summary of Bread Beauty Supply, taken from their website.

BREAD BEAUTY SUPPLY is: here for the essentials. The must-haves. Like bread.

We think you make good hair, and we make good hair products.

We felt there was a need for a brand that would look and think differently for all of it: the curls, fuzz, frizzy bits, bangs, braids, bantu, other bits.

But we don’t want haircare to feel forced or chore-like anymore. Haircare should be fun.

So we’re starting small, helping you win on wash-day. Our kit 1- wash is the full bread basket, with all the essentials you need for a routine clean. Then we have other things to layer (and layover) between showers, like hair-oil (lip gloss for your strands) and hair-cream (leave-in conditioning and styling for all-over).

Like fresh treats from *that* one local bakery or restocking your signature brand of soy milk, the ‘essentials’ can be exciting when you know where to look, and when you find what’s right for you.

Product Information

As you can see from the description above, Bread’s branding is focused on providing haircare essentials that make your wash days easier. I purchased their kit 1-Wash Haircare Kit because I thought it would give me a taste of all their bestseller products. The purpose of the kit is to provide a reliable, good smelling, three-step routine for all textures, especially for curly, textured hair.

Price: $58

Kit Includes:

  • hair-wash (8.4 fl. oz.)
  • hair-mask (12 fl. oz.)
  • hair-oil (3.3 fl. oz.)
  • bread-puff (scrunchie)

Specs: color safe, silicone free, vegan, sulfate free and cruelty free

(Full list of ingredients can be found on the Bread Beauty Supply website.)

Steps:

  1. Cleanse hair and scalp with hair-wash.
  2. Moisturize and condition with hair-mask.
  3. Lock in your conditioning groundwork with hair-oil to keep hair soft and malleable.
  4. Style as you like, or with hair-cream.
  5. Then whisk up in a pineapple bun with a bread-puff (read: scrunchie), or slip on your wrist for later styling.

Initial Thoughts

My initial reaction when my Bread Kit arrived in the mail was that I loved the packaging. I don’t know about you, but I’m a sucker for cute packaging. So basically I wouldn’t be embarrassed to have these products on display in my shower. When I actually started using the products, my initial reaction was focused on how amazing everything smelled! Imagine Fruit Loops cereal mixed with Life Savers gummies. So overall, let’s just say my first impression of Bread was off to a great start. 😋

Experience + Results

@styleprose Bread has great packaging, high quality ingredients & a nice smell. I like it! Their 3 step essentials kit did make my wash day simple & easy. However, for someone who has very thick, long hair, who often wears it straight and gets a lot of product buildup, I need products that get my hair super clean. I feel like Bread is better for everyday/weekly use vs. monthly use in between protective styles/heat styles, imo! #breadbeauty #breadbeautysupply #hairproductreview #healthadepopit #blackwomen ♬ Special Attention – IceBeatChillz

As someone with long, thick and kinky-coily hair, my hair wash days can be complex to say the least. I appreciated how simple and easy the 3-step Bread product process was to follow. The hair wash, mask and oil felt great on my hair. However, I do want to note that after using the hair wash, the strands of my hair felt clean, but I did not get that ‘squeaky’ clean feeling on my scalp, like I have with other shampoos.

In terms of the hair mask, I liked it, but I didn’t feel that it was anything special. You know when you put on a face mask at home to relax and create that at-home spa environment? Although it’s nice, let’s be honest, it’s not the same as going to a real spa. The mask may not even do anything specifically groundbreaking for you skin…but it’s more of a placebo effect. Well, that’s how the Bread hair mask felt – like a face mask. It was nice, but I didn’t see any noticeable differences in my hair.

I have no complaints about the bread puff. It had great stretch and I love the silk material. I mean, who doesn’t like a scrunchie! Out of all of the products, however, I think my favorite was the hair gloss. The oil definitely made my hair shiny and served as the perfect finishing touch as I was styling my hair.

Pros/Cons

I usually go to the hair salon to get my hair done. I don’t often do my hair myself, mainly because I don’t have the time nor patience for it. Additionally, I typically wear my hair straight and/or in protective styles, which means that I tend to get a lot of product buildup. When I wash my hair, I need clarifying shampoos that are really going to get my scalp clean (I personally like the Ouai detox shsampoo). Although the Bread hair wash is good for basic, everyday washing, it’s not the best for what I personally would need to use it for (washing in between straight styles/ptrotective styles).

I try not to put a lot of heat on my hair, but I do use heat, so in haircare products I’m looking for products that will protect and strengthen the health of my natural curls. I didn’t feel any effects after using the hair mask, like I usually do with Olaplex No. 3, for example. So if you’re looking for hair products to use in between protective styles and straight styles, I don’t think that Bread is the best option to reach for. But if you’re someone who wears your hair in its natural state, washes your hair regularly and is looking for basic, simple haircare essentials, Bread is great for that.

If you’re going to purchase Bread products, I definitely recommend starting out with the kit because it’s the most bang for your buck. Getting 3 full-size products for $58 is a good deal, especially for natural hair care products (which can be pricey). Additionally, the products are high quality with clean ingredients. My hair feels, looks and smells nice after using the products, which is always a good thing in my book! As I said earlier in the post, I love the smell of these products as well as the packaging. Ultimately, I have nothing but great things to say about Bread! The products do what they say they’re going to do and are overall great haircare essentials to keep in your bathroom.

Rating

I give Bread a 4/5 rating. Although the products don’t fit what I personally need, I think that they are great, reliable products overall. I’m interested in trying some of their other products and I can’t wait to see what other product lines that plan to develop in the future. Have you tried Bread Beauty? How was your experience? Leave a comment and let me know. If you haven’t taken a look at Bread yet, I highly recommend doing so!
