Dose of Prose

Founded in 2006 by Romano Ricci, Juliette Has A Gun is a fragrance brand, that views wearing perfume as much more than just smelling nice, but rather, it’s a weapon…it’s a statement…it’s an affirmation of who you are. I discovered JHAG online and have been fortunate enough to be on their PR list. Over the last couple years I’ve been able to test and try out their various perfumes and other products (i.e. body lotion/sprays, shower gel, laundry detergent, etc.), and after wearing different JHAG perfumes while out and about, I have finally discovered my favorites.

Whether you’ve never heard of JHAG, or maybe you’ve seen the brand in Sephora but are unsure of which perfume to go for, or in general if you’re looking to switch up your scent game, this blog post is for you. In today’s post, I will rank and review all of the JHAG signature, bestseller fragrances, to help you determine whether it’s worth the hype and $$$ (IMO, it is!).

Quick Stats

  • All JHAG fragrances are formulated and made in France
  • JHAG offers perfumes under 3 main scent families: Musk, Floral & Gourmand
  • Price range per bottle size (for bestsellers only) –
    • 100 ml: $150
    • 50 ml: $115
    • 7.5 ml: $34

My Top Picks for JHAG Perfumes in 2024:

  1. Ode to Dullness
This unique blend of a fragrance is unlike anything I’ve experienced before and I love it! There’s so much beauty and comfort in the ordinary, little things in life, and Ode to Dullness successfully captures the enjoyment that the mundane brings.

There’s a quote that says, Behind the apparent dullness, often lies the extraordinary, and I think that is the perfect way to describe this scent. I put this fragrance in first place because of how special it is compared to other perfumes. Truly, I haven’t smelled anything like this before. With notes of Cashmere flower, Sandalwood and Tonka bean, this fragrance is anything but dull! I love how the scent starts off strong, musky and sexy…yet lingers as light, creamy and sweet on your skin.

I consider this smell to be unisex, as it’s neither overly masculine nor feminine. It’s the perfect fall scent – it brings all the cozy vibes. However, you can definitely feel luxurious wearing Ode to Dullness any time of the year. Overall, I feel sophisticated and wealthy when I wear OTD, and if you give this one a try, I know you will too.

  2. Juliette
One word: ICONIC. As one of JHAG’s newer perfumes, the intent behind the creation of Juliette was to reconnect back with the company’s true essence, which was to shake up the industry and explore the many facets of femininity. I mean, the red bottle alone screams sensual and empowered, yet warm. As soon as your spray Juliette, you will be hit with dark cherry. Then the scent settles into a very seductive, sexy and warm smell…yet finishes strong with a punchy peppery flare.

Please beware – this is a grown woman scent. If you wanna be that girl, the HBIC, this is the perfume for you. I ranked Juliette #2 because as a black woman working in the white male dominated field of finance, this scent makes me feel encouraged to continue to take up space.

This fragrance is great to wear for date night or during a romantic getaway with your partner. Or if you’re a boss and need to do boss sh*t, like lead a meeting, give a presentation or speak on a panel…it’s great for that too. I prefer to wear this during the evening or at night, but as intoxicating and addicting as it smells, honestly you could get away with wearing this one any time of day. Ladies, check Juliette out and thank me later!

  3. Pear Inc.
This favors the Dolce&Gabbana Light Blue perfume. Pear Inc is very light, citrus-y and it has some musk, but it’s not too strong. If you want something airy and fruity with a little bit of musk that layers really well, then Pear Inc is the way to go. It’s great for any time of the day. Pear does feel more like a spring/summer scent, but you could get away with wearing this in the winter for sure.

  4. Vanilla Vibes
Just like the name says, Vanilla Vibes is your standard vanilla scent, but what makes this one stand out is the sea salt and musk notes. It’s not cupcake sugary Bath & Body Works sweet…it’s more like a mature vanilla, think vanilla bean. If you like warmer scents, this one is for you!

  5. Ego Stratis
With similar notes as Pear Inc., Ego Stratis is another citrus-like, musky scent. Although this one is described as a cologne, I believe it’s more on the unisex side, meaning I think both men and women could wear this. ES is not as citrus-y as Pear Inc. With Pear Inc, the scent is very light and the only fruit note is pear, whereas ES has tangerine and blueberry notes. The citrus comes through a lot stronger in ES, but the musk in there keeps it warm and sexy. If you’re open to more masculine scents or prefer colognes over perfumes, ES is a great one to consider.

  6. Lust For Sun
You will feel officially ready for summer thanks to this scent! The best way I can describe the Lust For Sun scent is that it reminds me of sunscreen (but in a good way)! It’s floral, but not heavily floral due to the warm vanilla and coconut notes in there to balance it out. There’s also some citrus in this one, but I’ve noticed that it comes through mainly after the fragrance settles, aka after I’ve been wearing It for a few hours.

Overall this scent is very light, beachy and ultimately, perfect for the summertime. It honestly makes me feel like I’m on vacation every time I wear it! There’s something very nostalgic and refreshing about this scent to me, so it’s definitely on my rotation during the warmer months.

  7. Not a Perfume
The best way I can describe this perfume is that it has a musky type of scent. It reminds me a lot of the Glossier ‘You’ perfume (but better). Although this is a JHAG bestseller and most likely a #1 in the typical consumers eyes, the reason I placed this lower on the list is because I prefer it as a detergent vs. a perfume. To me, this is a great scent for your linens and sheets. However, I will say that if you are going to dive blindly into Juliette Has a Gun, then Not a Perfume is a safe option to go with. It’s popular and universally is a nice scent. Overall you can’t wrong with this one!

Honorable Mentions

  • Lady Vengeance
Although it’s not Louis Vuitton, this LV is so sophisticated! The rose, vanilla and patchouli notes make the scent exude maturity. If you’re into floral scents and want a fragrance that embodies more of a Chanel vibe, you’ll like this one. I will admit that Lady Vengeance is more powdery, so some may feel that it smells like ‘old lady,’ but to me it comes off as classy and elegant.
  • Magnolia Bliss
Similar to LV, this is another one of JHAGs floral scents. However, Magnolia Bliss differs from Lady Vengeance because it feels more youthful. Think of how the Marc Jacobs Daisy line smells and MB would fit right in that collection. It’s a nice, versatile spring/summer scent, and works well for younger age groups.

  • Musc Invisible
Just like the name says, the scent is invisible! It smells so light that it practically disappears. You know those wall plug-in scents that say fresh linen or waterfall? Yeah, it reminds me of that. As you can imagine, this scent is very fresh, clean and light. Don’t get me wrong, Musc Invisible is not a bad scent, I just wish it was stronger and had longer lasting power. Maybe this one didn’t work with my body chemistry but either way, I couldn’t smell it on myself so I have to put it towards the bottom of the list.
  • MMM…
Last and unfortunately, my least favorite JHAG fragrance is Mmm… The name honestly describes how I feel about the scent, which is Mmm…? No thanks. To me, this one smells like straight up medicine. The raspberry note is so strong in it that it reminds me of a Halls lozenge or Robitussun. I know, I’m really selling the fragrance here lol, but again, it’s not that the perfume smells bad, it’s just that it’s not the perfume for me. The best way I can describe it is that it’s buttery, creamy and fruity, like a raspberry cream candy. Again, it’s not the scent for me, but I can see why others would enjoy it. So if raspberry is your thing, you’ll love it!

Final Thoughts

Hope you enjoyed my ranking and review of the JHAG bestseller perfumes! The TLDR is: if it’s your first time buying JHAG, either go with a discovery set so you can try out the main perfumes, or if you want to buy one and be done, I suggest Not a Perfume, Pear Inc., Vanilla Vibes, Ego Stratis or Juliette. I could go without LV, Magnolia Bliss, Music Invisible and Mmm…and wouldn’t recommend purchasing these on your first go around. But if you’re specific with the type of scent that you want or know the notes you’re looking for and these fit you and you like it, then get it! I’m not not here to tell you what to buy, but rather, how to make a better buy based on informed decision-making.

If you’re like me and enjoy matching your scent to your mood, outfit and the weather outside, then again, the discovery set is your best bet. I hope this post is helpful! Have you heard of JHAG? What are your favorite fragrance brands? What scent notes do you prefer? Leave a comment and let me know! Maybe the JHAG team will see this and give me a discount code for you. *crosses fingers* We’ll see. I’ll catch you in my next post.
